    Timeline

    Year 1: The student takes and passes CHEM684CHEM687, PHYS612, and PHYS613, completes 3 laboratory rotations, and chooses the laboratory for his/her PhD research.

    Year 2: Before the start of the Fall semester, the student takes and passes Parts A1 & A2 of the Qualifying Exam. Before the start of the Spring semester, the student takes and passes Parts B1 & B2 of the Qualifying Exam.

    The student embarks on obtaining preliminary results for his/her research project and completes the advanced course requirements.

    Year 3: The student prepares a scholarly paper and presents it. The student advances to candidacy and focuses completely on his/her research.

    Years 4-6: The student continues and completes his/her research, which resolves in a PhD defense.
