    Chemical Physics Ph.D. Student Renjie Zhao was first-author on the paper "Response Theory for Static and Dynamic Solvation of Ionic and Dipolar Solutes in Water" with John Weeks, Distinguished University Professor of IPST. The paper was published in the Journal of Statistical Physics on February 17, 2020.

    Chemical Physics, NCI-UMD Partnership- 22 Jan 20

    Tsung-Jen Liao, biochemistry Ph.D. student and NCI-UMD Partnership student, published a first-author paper titled "High-Affinity Interactions of the nSH3/cSH3 Domains of Grb2 with the C-Terminal Proline-Rich Domain of SOS1" in the Journal of the American Chemical Society on January 23, 2020. Paper co-authors included NIH's Ruth Nussinov and UMD Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry David Fushman.

    With the arrival of Assistant Professor Leah Dodson in September 2019, UMD’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry expanded in new directions. Dodson is a laboratory astrochemist, which means she studies the chemistry of interstellar space and the atmospheres around other planets.

    Distinguished University Professor Ellen D. Williams has been named one of the 2019 fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). She was recognized for scientific contributions to nanotechnology as well as leadership on technical issues in national security and policy.

    Mary Pitman, a Ph.D. student in chemistry and member of the NCI-UMD Partnership program, co-authored a paper "Intrinsic elasticity of nucleosomes is encoded by histone variants and calibrated by their binding partners" with co-authors Yamini Dalal (NIH/NCI) and Garegin Papoian (Chemistry and Biochemistry/IPST). The paper was published online November 11, 2019, in PNAS.

    Chemical Physics Ph.D. Student I-Lin Liu Co-authors Paper in Nature Physics
    Chemical Physics- 06 Oct 19

    Researchers from the University of Maryland, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (National MagLab) and the University of Oxford have observed a rare phenomenon called re-entrant superconductivity in the material uranium ditelluride. The discovery furthers the case for uranium ditelluride as a promising material for use in quantum computers.

    A research report led by Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Professor Chris Davis and Visiting Research Scientist Miranda Van Iersel has been published in The Optical Society's Applied Optics journal. In addition, the manuscript, entitled "Measuring the turbulence profile in the lower atmospheric boundary layer,” has been highlighted as an Editor's Pick. Editor's Picks serve to highlight articles with excellent scientific quality and are representative of the work taking place in a specific field.

    A potentially useful material for building quantum computers has been unearthed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), whose scientists along with colleagues from the University of Maryland and Ames Laboratoryhave found a superconductor that could sidestep one of the primary obstacles standing in the way of effective quantum logic circuits.
