    Christopher Jarzynski Receives Prestigious Simons Fellowship

    Distinguished University Professor Christopher Jarzynski (IPST/CHEM/PHYS) was among three faculty members in the University of Maryland’s College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences (CMNS) who received 2020 Simons Foundation Fellowships. The prestigious fellowships provide support for faculty scientists to extend a one-term, university-sponsored sabbatical into a full year, allowing them to focus solely on advancing fundamental research in mathematics or theoretical physics.

    Chemical Physics Ph.D. Student Renjie Zhao was first-author on the paper "Response Theory for Static and Dynamic Solvation of Ionic and Dipolar Solutes in Water" with John Weeks, Distinguished University Professor of IPST. The paper was published in the Journal of Statistical Physics on February 17, 2020.

    Mary Pitman Receives Inaugural CCR/NCI Outstanding Ph.D. Student Award

    Mary Pitman, UMD-NCI program student, is an inaugural co-recipient of the NIH Center for Cancer Research (CCR), National Cancer Institute (NCI), Outstanding Ph.D. Student Award. The Center established the award in recognition of their contribution as a group, and to highlight some of the best Ph.D. work in the CCR laboratories. Over 100 students across clinical and basic science labs–including UMD, JHU and Oxford–were considered.

    NCI-UMD Partnership Ph.D. Student Mary Pitman Publishes First-author Paper in Biophysical Journal

    Mary Pitman, a Ph.D. student in chemistry and member of the NCI-UMD Partnership program, published a first-author paper "Minimal Cylinder Analysis Reveals the Mechanical Properties of Oncogenic Nucleosomes" with co-authors Yamini Dalal (NIH/NCI) and Garegin Papoian (Chemistry and Biochemistry/IPST). The paper was published online February 11, 2020, in Biophysical Journal

    A Physics Career Along the Path Less Traveled

    Michelle Girvan’s career defies easy categorization. Currently a professor of physics, very little of her research would be immediately recognizable to a physics traditionalist. Instead, she applies her physics training to tackle discipline-spanning scientific questions that range from social relationships and cancer genetics to artificial intelligence (AI). 

    When asked how she identifies herself to new colleagues, a thoughtful smile crossed her face as she pondered a reply.

    Distinguished University Professor Ellen D. Williams has been named one of the 2019 fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). She was recognized for scientific contributions to nanotechnology as well as leadership on technical issues in national security and policy.

    2019 Fall NCI-UMD Partnership for Integrative Research Cancer Minisymposium

    The Institute for Physical Science and Technology will host The Integrative Cancer Research Minisymposium on November 15, 2019. The minisymposium will highlight results from current collaborations and talks from NIH researchers. Researchers from other NIH institutes are welcome to participate and collaborate with our UMD colleagues. During the break, there will be ample time to discuss possible joint research projects.
